The avocado journey: from seeds to ripe fruits. Spoiler: it's a long road, but it's fascinating.
Stage 1

Avocado Is Planted

Avocado is a tree in the laurel family. The plant grows from a seed and requires a very specific comfort zone for its growth. It enjoys tropical and subtropical climates, it can't stand cold weather, and it needs lots of sunlight and high levels of humidity. Avoxy avocados grow on certified organic farms in Mexico, Tanzania, Israel and Colombia. Over there, they can enjoy the sun and rain showers all year round.
Stage 2

Avocado Is Growing

These trees can be as tall as 25 meters in the wild — true green giants. After it is planted, an avocado tree needs 3-6 years to bloom and produce a harvest. A tree can produce fruits on its own only after it is pollinated, so if there are no bees, there is no fruit. Farms often utilize modern artificial pollination technologies, which make the process of growing this superfruit more controlled and predictable.

Avocado Yields a Harvest

Young trees yield 200-300 kilograms of fruit per year; for older trees, this number can reach up to 800 kilograms. An avocado fruit can be picked from the tree when it entirely changes its color. When our HASS and GEM avocados become dark green, voila! They are ripe for the picking. To avoid harming a tree branch, instead of pulling the fruit off the tree, it needs to be cut off with a piece of its stem. Now, the fruits need to be stored at the preferred temperature of 5℃.
Stage 4

Avocado Is On the Way

After the harvest, the fruits are carefully selected and sorted by size. Avocados that pass this tough exam are packed into boxes, and then put into a cargo container with a temperature sensor. During the entire journey, the sensor checks the conditions that avocados are in every hour. The containers are sent to the port and start their trip, go through a layover in the Netherlands, and are then put in the trucks on their way to the Avoxy offices in Europe. Quite an eventful journey!

Stage 5

Avocado Ripens

Avoxy greets the superfruits in our avocado office. We thoroughly check each box and analyze the data we receive from the temperature sensor. Then, the fruits that will be sent to avocado fans will head to a ripening chamber, where a certain temperature is set and ethylene is added to the air. The conditions provided by this cutting-edge technology are identical to those that avocados would experience naturally, because the fruit itself produces ethylene. After the ripening stage, we get ripe purplish brown fruits with mild nutty flavor. That's it, they are ready to head your way.
